RHAPSODY RECAP

Monday, December 30th: Freedom from Sin

Main Theme: This devotional focuses on the concept of freedom from sin through Jesus Christ. It emphasizes that Christians are not just forgiven but are made righteous and empowered to live righteously.

Key Message & Facts:

·Confession and Acknowledgement: True confession goes beyond simply asking for forgiveness; it involves acknowledging our sins. “If we acknowledge our sins, God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

·Justification by Grace: God, in His righteousness, justifies us freely through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, not based on our actions. “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus…” (Romans 3:24)

·Freedom from Sin: The Greek word for forgiveness, "Aphiemi," means freedom. This emphasizes that God's intention is not just to forgive but to set us free from the power and influence of sin.

·Righteousness in Christ: Believers are made the righteousness of God in Christ, meaning they are declared righteous and given the ability to live righteously. “For he hath made him [to be] sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” (2 Corinthians 5:21)

·Two Types of Freedom: The devotional distinguishes between freedom from the bondage of sin (Satan's dominion) and freedom from sinning (the ability to live righteously).

Quotes:

·"God is not so much after you getting forgiveness as He is after the real reason for forgiveness. Forgiveness is from the Greek word 'Aphiemi' and it means freedom. The Father's focus is freedom from sin."

·"When we say freedom from sin, we're not talking about freedom from the bondage of sin but freedom from sinning. Freedom from the bondage of sin refers to Satan's dominion, which has been broken. But freedom from sin means the ability and possibility to live righteously and not to do wrong."

Tuesday, December 31st: Forgiveness is in the Package

Theme: Forgiveness is a Gift, Not a Request

The message:

·Forgiveness is already provided in Christ: This devotional argues that constantly asking for forgiveness is unnecessary because Jesus already secured forgiveness for believers. It emphasizes receiving forgiveness as an act of faith, like receiving an inheritance.

·Emphasis on "Lambano": The Greek word "lambano," meaning "to take" or "to receive," is highlighted to illustrate how forgiveness should be actively received rather than passively requested.

·The Danger of Uncertainty: The author warns that doubting God's forgiveness weakens faith and hinders Christian effectiveness. He argues that accepting forgiveness removes this uncertainty.

·Practical Application: The devotional encourages readers to confess their wrongdoing and declare their acceptance of forgiveness, shifting the focus from God's willingness to forgive to their willingness to receive.

Key Quotes:

·"Notice the emphasis... on receiving forgiveness of sins, not asking for it. You’re to 'take' forgiveness of sins."

·"The same way you receive an inheritance is how you receive forgiveness."

·"It’s superfluos to keep asking God for forgiveness."

·"[1 John 1:9] doesn't say, “ask for forgiveness”; rather, it says to acknowledge your sins. Why? It’s because He’s already provided for your forgiveness."

·"If Satan can keep you asking for forgiveness again and again and you aren’t sure whether or not you’re being forgiven, he will make you ineffective in your Christian life."

·"It’s no longer a question of whether or not God has forgiven you; rather, it’s about whether you have received what He already made available to you."

Wednesday, January 1st: Get Busy for the Lord

A Call to Action for the Coming of the Lord. This devotional message, published on January 1st, emphasizes the urgency of spreading the Gospel in light of the Lord's imminent return. The key theme is the need for believers to be actively engaged in God's work, particularly soul-winning, rather than being preoccupied with worldly concerns.

Main points:

·The Rapture is near: The text highlights the belief in the imminent Rapture, the event where believers will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. This impending event underscores the urgency of the message.

·Live in anticipation: Believers are urged to live with the awareness of Christ's return. The author warns against spiritual slumber, emphasizing the need to be actively working for the Lord. Mark 13:35-36 is cited: "Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh... Lest coming suddenly he find you sleeping."

·Service to God vs. service to man: The text challenges the notion that any service to man equates to service to God. True service, it argues, is fulfilling the tasks God has specifically called you to do.

·Live for Christ, not self: The message stresses the importance of living for Christ, who died and rose again, rather than pursuing personal ambitions. This call to action is supported by 2 Corinthians 5:15: "And that he died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto him which died for them, and rose again."

Thursday, January 2nd: The Full Picture of the Gospel Mandate

A Call to Global Evangelism

Main Theme: The daily devotional emphasizes the importance of understanding and fulfilling the full scope of the Gospel mandate, which is to preach repentance and remission of sins to all nations, confirmed by divine signs.

Key Message and Facts:

·The Gospel is for everyone: "The Gospel is to be preached to every man, woman, boy, and girl; it’s for all nations." The devotional highlights the universal nature of the Christian message, drawing from the Synoptic Gospels.

·Preach and God confirms: Mark 16:20 is used to illustrate the dynamic between human action and divine power. "We preach the Word, and it’s the Lord’s responsibility to confirm it with signs following."

·Repentance and remission of sins are central: Luke 24:46-47 is highlighted to emphasize the core message of the Gospel. It's not just teaching or preaching in general but specifically declaring "repentance and remission of sins among all nations."

·Overcoming initial limitations: The early disciples initially focused on the Jewish community, but eventually embraced the global mission. This highlights the need for ongoing understanding and growth in fulfilling the mandate.

·Our responsibility today: The devotional connects the early church's mission with our present-day responsibility: "Today, we carry that same mission, teaching all that Jesus commanded, preaching the Gospel to every creature and to all nations, declaring repentance, and the remission of sins in His Name."

Quotes of Note:

·"This makes our responsibility clear: We preach the Word, and it’s the Lord’s responsibility to confirm it with signs following."

·"The Lord’s message was not just to teach or preach but to declare repentance and remission of sins among all nations."

·"The Gospel was always meant for all nations, for every creature (Mark 16:15)."

Friday, January 3rd: Stay in the Word

Main Theme: The power of parental blessings and curses, the importance of staying within God's Word for protection, and the biblical mandate to honor parents.

Key Message & Facts:

·Impact of Parental Pronouncements: Both blessings and curses spoken by parents can have significant, even "powerful" implications in a person's life, as evidenced by biblical examples.

·Born Again Status and Curses: For those who are born again, past curses from parents lose their power. However, reconciliation is encouraged.

·Quote: "If, however, you had a problem with your parents before you were born again and they pronounced a curse on you, now that you’re born again, that curse will no longer have any effect."

·Vulnerability Outside God's Word: Living outside God's Word leaves individuals vulnerable to curses and negative influences.

·Quote: "If you live outside the Word, you open yourself to potential danger; you break the hedge as it were. And the Bible says, “…whoso breaketh an hedge, a serpent shall bite him” (Ecclesiastes 10:8)."

·Honoring Parents and Blessings: Honoring parents, as commanded in Ephesians 6:1-3, comes with the promise of well-being and long life.

·Quote: "This commandment comes with a promise: that it may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth."

·Christian Parents and Blessings: Christian parents are urged to bless their children, not curse them.

Saturday, January 4th: The Sacrificial Love

Theme: The Sacrificial Love of Jesus Christ

The Message:

·Jesus' death as a demonstration of unparalleled love: The devotional opens with John 15:13, emphasizing that Jesus' act of laying down his life for his friends is the greatest example of love.

·Christ's sacrifice removes condemnation: Pastor Chris Oyakhilome highlights Romans 5:8 and 8:1 to explain that Christ's death on the cross absolves believers from judgment and condemnation. This is because He took the punishment for their sins upon Himself.

·Jesus as the sin-bearer: 2 Corinthians 5:19 and 1 Peter 2:24 are cited to illustrate that God does not hold the sins of humanity against them because Jesus became the bearer of their sins, allowing them to live righteously.

·The call to live for Christ: The author draws from 2 Corinthians 5:14-15 to emphasize that because Christ died for all, all are considered dead to sin. This death signifies a new life lived not for oneself but for Christ, as a response to His sacrifice.

Key Quotes:

·"God isn’t counting men's sins against them because He laid their sins on Jesus."

·"Jesus became the sin-bearer."

·"Don't live unto yourself but unto Him. This is the right response to His sacrificial love."
